About Me

Just a coder.
My name is Stephen Ball and I’m a 29 year old web programmer, emerging technologies advisor, tech support specialist, and all around computer guy. I work at the Undergraduate Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of the University Library’s Systems Department.
My favorite language is Ruby, but I also speak perl, php, and some python (although its design is mysterious: No switch statement? Sort alters the array sorted? Join is a method of the character not the array?).
I’m currently working my way through javascript from the ground up. I hate black boxes and I’ve let javascript practically serve as one for far too long. I coded a Firefox library search toolbar in XUL and javascript but still am only passing familiar with the language.
When I’m not programming I am very much a videogame geek. I own all three consoles, but only have blu-ray movies for the PS3. I’m “TheRealXyzzyB” on XBox Live. I also enjoy all the popular entertainment mediums from books (George R. R. Martin) to television (BSG) to online flash animation (Homestar Runner).
