Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is simply an astonishing work. Randomly wandering around the ruined landscape surrounding Washington DC in the year 2277 is one of the most amazing gaming experiences I’ve ever had. I watched the sun rise from a small village set on a half ruined overpass and could actually see the birds circling the nearby town of Megaton, off in the distance I could barly make out the ruined tower of the Washington Monument with the Capital Building beyond. Beautiful.

I even got to cross the Potomac and fight a super-mutant while Stephen was feeding the baby! Yay!

You can tell how good and immersive game characterization is when the choices flow naturally. I’m usually one to weigh my options endlessly, but in this game, I found myself blowing away the Overseer without even thinking about it. Love it.

Whoa you killed the Overseer? I just made him promise not to hold what’s-her-name responsible for my actions.

I did think briefly about reloading when a character I liked was killed, but the game had me so immersed that I just went on. Very nicely done. I really think I could have saved him, and that haunting memory is now part of my character. Awesome, awesome to the max.

His goons beat Jonas to death, what else could I do? Judge, jury, and executioner, reporting for duty.

Have you recruited anyone yet? I saw an opening to recruit Jericho, but it didn’t feel right for my character and besides, he seems pretty sketch.

I was seriously tempted, but I figured that I’d already killed the goons that killed Jonas so didn’t want to leave a vault of anarchy behind.

I haven’t recruited anyone. I offered Jericho a place, but I was too goody-goody for him. :-)

My character Gong Li is a little cloying, always helping people, giving away water, giving away scrap metal, doing just about anything that anyone asks. I wasn’t really surprised when mercenaries tried to collect a bounty on my head.

My next play through I’m going to be an evil, charismatic, and lucky character. THEN comes a ninja.

My character, Tomas, is hostile and greedy. I thought he might be gay, but he fell head over heels for the blond paladin from the moment he saw her laser rifle. I don’t think it’s going to end well.

Blond paladin? Gong Li has a crush on Ms. West (completely unreciprocated, poor guy) but we haven’t run into any chicks with laser rifles. Cool.
